A neat place to try learn about new board games and try new ones. Tables are primarily first come first serve. Rooms can be reserved for more privacy. There is also a restaurant attached, but a little pricy for what it is, but you can bring the board game to the restaurant side and play while eating. The only thing is you will need to wait for a table to open. You can also place and pay your order through the phone so you can continue playing. Thankfully, to try a board game it is free and you can stay as long as you want. They have a great collection of games to try and even the workers can tell you a bit about the games and give you recommendations based on what you are looking to play. You can also buy trading cards and brand new sealed board games. So, if there was a game you enjoyed playing you could possibly pick it right there. Pricing for games wasn't bad, but was a little higher respectively. A great place to hangout and do something off electronic devices with family and friends! Show less

Mox Boarding House is an excellent place to hang out, and I love how it acts a community space for visitors to play board games in a public setting, allowing for people to connect with others in a unique way. At the same time it's a restaurant that serves delicious (though expensive) food and drinks to enjoy while playing said games. I would highly recommend their chicken strips, or their macaroni and cheese. They also have good beverages. You could honestly come just for the menu without playing games, though I believe you'd be missing part of the experience. The employees provide great customer service, and they do their best to create a plesant atmosphere. It seems like many of the workers are versed in popular games, including Magic: The Gathering, and can answer any questions if needed while learning something new. Connected to the restaurant is a game store, which has a lot to check out, sometimes free giveaways. My one problem is that it gets a bit annoying when the place gets overly loud on evenings, and I tend to get overstimulated. Other people with sensitivity to sound may face the same problem here. Also, I personally am bothered when people who don't seem to hold any interest in games hang out because they're in the area, be it for a soccer game or in general. Show less

We couldn't rave any more about Mox's Boarding House than we already do. This was an absolute gem of a find while visiting Portland. We couldn't rave any more about Mox's Boarding House than we already do. This was an absolute gem of a find while visiting Portland. We are BIG board game people and thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere, the service, the food, and the drinks. Everything was stellar. Though it's a gaming-while-you-eat atmosphere, it never felt unsanitary. We were in town for a little over a week, but made it a point to visit Mox's a couple of times before we left to fly back to the east coast. 2 years later and we STILL rave about this place and talk about going to OR or WA again just to visit, haha. 10/10. Also, we loved viewing all of the board games sold in the shop--many we had never even heard of. Show less
