I love Brooklyn Game Lab, and I've been going there for 4 months (I haven't been there in 2 months due to summer break otherwise it would be 6), and I love all the staff, they are very helpful, and helped me learn a lot of new board games, and, of course, my favorite part, they DM D&D sessions really well. I also really like all the kids, as they are all very nice and fun to play with. However, I do have two issues with game lab. The first is that they take all the holidays off, school or no school, even if the teachers don't get off, except that they still run he programs that they charge extra for. For example memorial day weekend. They canceled teen program on Saturday and they canceled their usual Sunday tabletop program also. When I asked "why?", They responded that it was memorial day weekend, and that all the kids leave on Friday right after school for vacation, and that a lot of the staff also leave on friday morning/afternoon for vacation, but if that's true then why do they still hold Friday RPG for $24 per kid? And not only that, they had around 20 kids come to that, and easily enough staff members there to take care of them, yet they couldn't do that Saturday when there would be even LESS kids to take care off. It's all about making money for them, but it's not right because my mom has to pay for that Saturday where there's no programs, and it's the same for months with breaks, in February even though we all miss a whole week of game lab there's no discount. My second issue is that game lab is a boardgame/RPG place, not a homework place. It's very disappointing to see that they have replaced Monday's design lab and wednesday's RPG with "homework hours". I recieved an email saying that everyone should be happy because teen program is now at only $100, not $150, but what they failed to mention in the email was that they took away Mondays and Wednesdays, but when I looked up what they were replaced with, I found that while they used to be 6:30-8:00, there is now a program called "homework hours" from 6:00-7:00, and no programs past that. Game lab is place where kids are supposed to play board games, not do homework, and to replace board games hours with homework hours is a step in the wrong direction in my opinion. The main reason I signed up was because I needed something to do after school on Mondays and Wednesdays (on Tuesdays and Thursdays I do tennis). Now all that's left are Saturdays. I'm still going to stick with game lab because I really like the kids and staff and saturdays are great, and I really hope that they turn homework hours back into teen program hours. That's what I have to say.Overall I highly recommend going here, because the staff and kids are amazing, and I advise to do the teen program because then your kid will get to go there for an affordable price and get to play a lot of board games. It’s also great if your kid likes board games but doesn’t want to do them every day, because they can just spend one day a week doing a lot of board games. Update: recently during winter break the teen program was not canceled on either of the saturdays we had off. I’m very happy about it and hope that it remains true for all holidays. Show less

11 years agoGreat local game shop on 7th ave. I don't have kids but have heard great things about the day programs for kids. I've been to the evening game meetups for adults and they're great. Bob runs a fun and inclusive evening and welcomes everyone. It's a great way to meet new friends and neighbors.

8 years agoMy son went to a week of summer camp and loved it so much he became a member of the Saturday teen hang-out and has been attending regularly since the fall. We really appreciate that it's screen-free, he's making friends and building skills. The staff is terrific.

2 years agoGamelab is a part of our kid’s life that’s been nothing but positive. A fantastic community and great staff. Update: after years as a camper they are now part of the volunteer staff. Some of the friends they made have turned out to be long term and they still game together. 6/5 stars :)

1 year agoHuge selection of board games, attentive and responsive staff, low staff : participant ratio, good measure of independence and mentorship to the student volunteers. When throwing an event, all the guests had a ton of fun and would love to come again.
