2 years agoI've been going here for many years for my table top roleplaying game needs and when board or card games catch my fancy from YouTube. Bryan and the many people who work there have been helpful and friendly.

As a customer, I can only report positive experiences with Austin and the other staff. When a few of the players wanted to travel to a large tournament, the store helped organize a team, housing, and transportation all to help benefit the players. Game HQ is a decent spot for Magic: The Gathering events, with a long-standing layout and an open food policy that’s a nice touch. However, the experience can be hit or miss. Many of the staff don’t seem knowledgeable about the cards or enthusiastic about being there, and it seems like only 2-3 people, like Tristan, really know how to organize and sort through orders properly. If you’re placing an order, I’d recommend looking out for Tristan or those few staff members who take pride in their work to avoid long waits. The tables and chairs show their age, which reflects the layout remaining unchanged for over a decade. While I’ve never felt unwelcome, some friends have mentioned getting a weird vibe if they hang around without buying anything. Pricing isn’t always competitive, so you might find better deals at places like Wizards Asylum or DZ Comics. Overall, Game HQ works if you’re attending Magic events, but for better prices or service, there are other options worth considering. Show less

My family loves this place. It's always a great experience! They sell all kinds of games (the board/card type, not the video type) for every audience, no matter your interests, your age, or your price range. Selection: They have a huge selection ranging from classics to modern favorites to totally unique items, too. Stuff for 2 players, small groups, or large parties. So many cool themes and different types of games. Travel, mystery, space, folklore, spy, and so many, many more! Quality: Everything is high quality, not like those cheap and flimsy games you get at Walmart. This is where you go to get games that last. Staff: The owner and the staff are super cool to talk to and very helpful. The owner helped us personally, and he was super knowledgeable. I needed a secret Santa gift, so I described my person's interests and social lifestyle, then he gave several solid recommendations. I left with three of them (one was for me 😉). Events: I don't have the full details, but I know they host events and such. I'm pretty sure there are D&D groups that meet there. If you need a spot, give them a call. Special: Warhammer and D&D lovers, check this place out! D&D people, they have a whole bunch of stuff for you. I saw figures and dice, and even paint for creating your own pieces. I don't know much about D&D, but it looked like a big selection. Warhammer people, again, I don't know much, but we facetimed our buddy in LA who is a huge fan, and he said he's never seen such a huge selection. He's actually excited to visit us in Oklahoma now, lol. Show less

2 months agoDecent amount of games. Overpriced. However, would have bought some games if the people there knew what they had. Needed a game for 8 people to play at once. The guy said that they really don't do that. Also, it smelled like B.O. I was hoping for better after seeing the other reviews.

Fantastic store with a great selection of board games, models, paints, and pretty much anything else you could want from a game/hobby store. Staff are helpful and the overall environment is welcoming. The owner (at least I think he's the owner) is super friendly. I've run Dungeons and Dragons and Warhammer 40k at the store in the past. They offer more than enough tablespace and have a good amount of terrain for public use. If you've got a group that needs a meeting place with a large table, this is a great spot that won't disappoint. Their prices are more than reasonable, and the store offers occasional sales and a rewards system that often lets you bag items for surprisingly cheap. The following is in no way a critique of the store, just an observation. I've found this location isn't necessarily the best for new hobbyists to get into a game/community. Most players you'll find here on the day-to-day have their "in-groups." If you're someone like me who doesn't know anyone locally that engages in a hobby like DnD, 40k, etc., you may have a hard time finding a group here. They do have a Facebook and Discord, but they're not very active, and, again, most people tend to stick to others they know from outside those platforms. There are exceptions to this, of course. It would be nice to see the store host a few more events catered to game/hobby newcomers. Low stakes events that encourage people to network and grow the community. For example, 40k tournaments are great, but they tend to attract "meta-chasers" and people more focused on winning rather than just enjoying the game and helping newcomers learn how to play. This type of thing is not going to attract new players. Again, not a criticism, just an observation with recommendation. All that said, 10/10. 100% chance I will return to buy more plastic crack.
