4 months agoBeautiful gardens. I do suggest you have 3 or 4 hours atleast to enjoy everything. They have several tours, beautiful trails, small zoo-like experience and a small cafe.

Great time to visit. No crowds, walk paths are a great way to see the gardens. No waiting for the tours. Everyone was very nice and a lot of history here.

Beautiful plantation. Take the Slavery to Freedom tour. I am a local tour guide downtown (unaffiliated with Magnolia,) and slavery is one of the hardest subjects to discuss. There is a gravity and delicate nature to discussing the horrors of our area’s past. An Irishman named John gave the tour and it was informative, respectful, riveting, and most important real. He didn’t sugar coat, he didn’t sensationalize, he didn’t blame, he simply painted a picture of what the lives of slaves were like in a time when people were treated as property. He told the facts and told them well. In a world where many fear to discuss the sins of the past, and where some prefer to pretend they didn’t exist in the first place, John shares and honors the history of an oppressed people who built the beauty that stands there today. The boat and the train tours were both fun ways to hear a little history and see some of the local wildlife. This is a solid option for people who don’t want to walk too much. My parents are in their golden years, and long walks can be a problem. They were able to enjoy their day at Magnolia Plantation. Also there is a cat! Show less

We visited Magnolia Plantation as a family and had mixed feelings. While the grounds are likely stunning in the spring, we found it disappointing for a winter visit. Despite being advertised as a year-round destination, the scenery felt sparse, making the high admission price feel overpriced for the off-season. However, the highlight of our visit was the "From Slavery to Freedom" tour. Our guide, John, gave a blunt and cut-throat narration of the history of slavery. He didn't sugarcoat anything, which allowed us to truly feel the gravity of that dark era. It was a powerful, sobering experience for our family, though we hope the management adjusts pricing to better reflect the seasonal reality of the gardens. Show less

It's simply beautiful! The grounds, gardens, bridge, gazebo, oak trees, the swamp, the Ashley River... You have to visit it to see it with your own eyes.

The House and Gardens are astoundingly beautiful and well maintained and definitely worth a visit. However, I am only giving it 4 stars for the following reasons: 1. The website needs work; it does not properly list the tours and costs. 2. Because the website is confusing, everyone waits to buy tickets in person and they had 1 person working. It took about 10 minutes for the worker to explain all the tours and options so the line was very long. 3. Everything was a separate cost. We ended up paying about $127 for 2 to do the house and boat tour. When I expressed some shock at the cost, the worker said that all of the local plantations charged separately for everything. For reference, it cost us $54 for 2 to tour the house and Gardens at Boone Hall Plantation. If they could simplify their tours and modify their website, it would be a great improvement to a spectacular place. Show less

I was very hesitant to visit a plantation, however, this one had great reviews about the gardens and other activities on the property. They should probably add in the "know before you go" section on their website. It is extremely buggy. Do not forget to wear bug spray. My family has never been so bit up after leaving a place. The Cafe was just okay. We took the nature tour and did the slavery to freedom tour. Again, the nature tour was just okay. We saw some cool things but did not think the trip was worth over $100 for a family of four. The gardens really are beautiful and I am sure it is a great place for photos, but I wished they would have highlighted more of the tragedy of slavery rather than a potential wedding venue. I'm glad I experienced one plantation, however I wouldn't go back. Show less

We tried to purchase a tour of the home, but were unable to purchase on-line. When we got there we learned that the tours were sold out. We stayed anyway and walked around the grounds. Saw my first alligator in the wild. The magnolia flowers were really beautiful.

A must see. You can make a day of visiting the plantation. It's stunning and restful. There are many walking trails. Beautiful wildlife can be seen throughout the property. The little restaurant has tasty food and snacks.

I visited in late September. I was very impressed with the kindness at hospitality of all the employees at Magnolia. From the gal in the gift shop to the garden workers. Special mention to John who gave the from Freedom to Slavery tour. This was the most informative and heartfelt experience I enjoyed at the plantation. The reality of history is not always pretty, but John did a very good job really helping us to imagine horrific the experience of the enslaved peoples. The gardens are spectacular and the house and train tour were very enjoyable as well. I came prepared with insect repellent as recommended in other reviews and escaped with only two "souvenir" mosquito bites to bring home. OFF is definitely a must, but don't let that discourage you from experiencing the beauty of this plantation. Show less

This is probably the one of the best paid attractions that you need to visit when you're in Charleston. There is a lot to see here for the money that you paid for and the whole place is beautiful. They have like a mini petting zoo. Their gardens is really fun to explore. Be sure to take advantage of some of the free attractions like their train tour. Sometimes they actually have a free guided tour of their gardens which is a must in my opinion. We did actually pay for the boat tours which I totally think was worth it we saw a lot of wildlife while we were on this tour. Don't expect a very manicured garden because they focus more on natural wildlife. One thing I highly highly advise when you go there make sure let you spray yourself with an off lotion as the mosquitoes are very persistent and you are guaranteed to get bit if you don't spray yourself. Skip the bug bracelets as it will not work and I was wearing five and it did not help at all. One thing to that I wish is that they paved the roads going into the plantation itself. But overall totally worth it because the ticket is for 2 days which is an awesome value! Show less

Gardens are English style, with proper expectations they are stunning. Great journey through checkered history of the land. Family owned and it shows. The generations of caretakers here shows in the beauty. It’s clear that the people here take great pride in preserving this part of history. The restrooms are clean and well maintained. Snack bar isn’t great and very expensive for what you get. The guides were very knowledgeable and each added a personal touch. John stood out in the Slavery to Freedom tour. If you’re able to spend time with him, consider yourself blessed. He spoke with such reverence and compassion for the heartbreaking circumstances the slaves endured, it brought my wife and I to tears. He makes the experience personal with details about families (both the plantation owners and generations of slaves) that I’ve not experienced before. When we were researching Magnolia, we saw a bad (and quite frankly, racist) review dismissing the Slavery to Freedom tour given by “a white Irishman”. Don’t let that kind of closed mindedness deter you. John may be white, and he may be Irish, but his heartfelt conviction about sharing history and moving beyond the horrors of slavery is second to none! Show less

The tours through the plantation house and the slave quarters were thoughtfully designed and offered a powerful insight into the lives of enslaved people. The beauty of the grounds—with centuries-old trees and a well-kept garden landscape—adds a peaceful atmosphere to the experience. What truly stood out was the exceptional staff: incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and passionate about sharing history. Both the lady in the main house and the one in the slave quarters were outstanding in their presentation and expertise. The gardens are absolutely stunning, with lush landscapes, vibrant flowers, and peaceful walking paths that make it easy to spend hours exploring. Every season offers something unique, from colorful blooms to serene views of the waterways and wildlife.
