We were there on a busy evening, but we never had our food orders taken at our table (had to go find someone) and weren’t offered water until we were about to leave (they were busy and only a few servers). Overall nice to try games, but too pricey to go back. Show less

It's always fun trying new board games but the hardest part is learning it so it helps that the staff can teach them! We learned how to play Cascadia this visit and it was so fun one of my friends bought it right after. It's $4/hr (I think they must've increased it recently) per person + each person has to buy a drink. Being able to sip on a cozy hot beverage at the same time is a nice bonus. The matcha latte was pretty average but satisfies the matcha crave. Show less

I recently had the chance to participate in a Rift Bound tournament at Hexagon Café in Edmonton, Alberta. As a fan of this TCG, I was excited to join their “Skirmish” event, which promised high-level competition among skilled players. The entry fee was $15, which isn’t unusual for such tournaments, but unlike other venues I’ve visited, Hexagon Café offered no basic incentives like a participation pack to make it feel worthwhile. This lack of entry-level rewards immediately set a disappointing tone, hinting at deeper issues with how the event was handled and making me question if the experience would justify the cost and time. The tournament itself took place in the cafeteria area, which seemed appropriate at first glance since we’re dealing with tabletop games. However, while the space is part of their setup, the cards we use are our personal stuff, and playing on their tables raised some concerns. The surfaces weren’t always clean or protected, leading to potential contamination or damage to valuable cards. Something that’s a big deal in the trading card community. It felt like the café prioritized their casual tabletop vibe over creating a dedicated clean environment for serious gameplay, which could have been easily addressed with simple measures like table covers or designated play zones. Organizationally, the event was a mess from start to finish. Rounds dragged on unnecessarily due to poor scheduling and disorganization, with a lot of time wasted on non-game-related tasks like mismatched pairings or delays before the rounds. Players often found themselves just sitting around between matches, which killed the momentum and made the whole evening feel inefficient. For a tournament billed as competitive, this lack of structure turned what should have been an engaging experience into a frustrating slog. Prizes were another major letdown, contributing to why so many participants dropped out midway. There was zero incentive for anyone outside the top performers—no extra winning pack rewards, no store credit, and not even a single pack for making it to the top eight. Sure, winners got a promo card and a play-mat, but after investing four and a half hours, that felt insultingly minimal. In conclusion, it’s clear Hexagon Café wasn’t skimping on prizes due to stock issues—they were actively selling Rift Bound packs right there in the shop, but chose not to offer any as participation incentives. This greedy approach not only repels new players who might be dipping their toes into the game but also prevents people like me who’ve attended the first event from coming back. Compounding the problem, their packs were priced at a whopping 250% over MSRP ($21.00), making the whole operation feel exploitative. I wouldn’t recommend this café for Rift Bound tournaments; paying $15 just to show up doesn’t feel justified at all. I’d rate my experience a dismal 1 out of 5—the only saving grace was the friendly and welcoming players who made the downtime somewhat bearable. Show less
