My local gaming store used to be Dueling Grounds. When the owner moved to Peterborough the staff took it over and kept it open. It's still primarily a place to get Games Workshop miniatures and hobby supplies, or to buy Magic Cards and play in Magic tournaments. It has a good selection of board game... Read more

My local gaming store used to be Dueling Grounds. When the owner moved to Peterborough the staff took it over and kept it open. It's still primarily a place to get Games Workshop miniatures and hobby supplies, or to buy Magic Cards and play in Magic tournaments. It has a good selection of board games and role playing game books now as well: impressive considering it's not so big a space. They have a nice big gaming space in the basement, with a good selection of terrain for war gaming. Sadly this is closed while the world deals with covid. If you are a war gaming fan one thing that makes the store stand out is it's big selection of used bits—a good source for cheap parts, certainly better than looking online or on eBay, though you will need to do some crate digging. My local gaming store used to be Dueling Grounds. When the owner moved to Peterborough the staff took it over and kept it open. It's still primarily a place to get Games Workshop miniatures and hobby supplies, or to buy Magic Cards and play in Magic tournaments. It has a good selection of board games and role playing game books now as well: impressive considering it's not so big a space. Selection is great despite the store's small size and they tend to restock items MUCH faster than other hobby stores in Toronto. I can't emphasize that second point enough - you'll be waiting months for a restock in other stores while S&B can get a new box on the shelf within a week. Staff is friendly and happy to chat or lend a hand if you have questions. The store is also located in a very convenient spot on Bloor just a short walk from the subway. Tips / critiques for a balanced review - be sure to sign up for their rewards program as their sticker price tends to be close to MSRP, and bring your own bag to carry your purchase. Show less

All of my handful of experiences here have been negative in some way. I wandered in the first time and asked about their process for singles. I too got the exasperated sighs, the condescension. "You gotta include the sets, otherwise you're not getting your cards". Very welcoming. So I tried to then order singles from here a few times. They have by far the most difficult and user-unfriendly experience for singles of any of the many LGS I've ever had lists pulled from. Their strict requirements for specifying sets, the lack of an itemized price list, their high prices which you can't break down because they get mad if you ask. But of course the worst part is their attitude and communication style. Somehow, I was always made to feel like they were doing me some massive favour by asking for the bare minimum, the norm. And okay, yes, no one likes their time wasted, you're entitled to have certain policies at your store. But ask yourself, why the chorus of people here who share my sentiment? There isn't a single other store in the dozens I've been to where I've felt like this, not even remotely. Enforce your policies, fine, but try to do it with some tact, and at least pretend like you care about keeping my business. Guys, these reviews - they're not misunderstandings, or a lack of context, or excusable because you're a "small store". There is a near constant stream of one-stars dating back years, that's not normal. This is a pattern. Not every little encounter needs to be broken down to rationalize what went wrong. There is an overall trend, you just have to choose to see what's plainly in front of you. Edit: Predictable response, so let me lay out for readers what you’ve characterized as “repeated refusal to follow store policy and wasting employees’ time”. I asked for a list pulled three times total. First, I email a list of fewer than ten cards asking for a stock check. You said you didn’t pull any lists without sets being specified. I said okay no problem, I’ll look elsewhere. No cardboard moved at all. Second, I asked for a couple of tokens and included set info. You pull some, I have to ask you for the price, I go in and was told I could only pay cash because it was under your card minimum, which you never bothered to tell me before training over. I don’t make a stink, I buy a spindown I didn’t want and left. Third, I sent a modest list of 20 cards with exact sets. You pulled 10 and gave me a lump sum. It was higher than expected, based on the research I did via Snapcaster 401 and f2f, despite you saying here that I didn't. The total was 150% higher than I could price based on the most expensive printings. So I ask for a price breakdown, politely, just once, and not before saying thank you. You snapped at me that no, you can only provide that before asking. So I decline the order and tell you I won’t be picking it up and to have a good one. Next e-mail, I was told I was “banned” from singles because I wasted your time. Point #4 is the only honest one and all you needed to say. You admit there’s an attitude problem, and in the next breath justify it and push the blame onto customers. That pattern is exactly what people are calling out here. Your bar for what constitutes “wasting your time” is on the ground. Meanwhile you seem to think that it’s a one way street, blind to how much time and energy you waste by making the process so unnecessarily opaque and abrasive for customers. I in fact did follow your rules and corrected my subsequent lists each time I learnt about your policies which are not explained clearly and not posted publicly. And it still wasn’t enough. I’m not hurt by being banned from buying singles at a store where I’ve never felt welcome. I’m angry - angry that you feel justified treating people in a community I love this way, and angry that after years of consistent feedback, you still refuse to take real accountability. Here is my assessment of Sword and Board, what it sells and its services RPG books- a large and impressive collection, including a LOT of older-edition copies Board Games- a decent selection but not as large as you would get from a dedicated board game store Miniature wargames- they have a HUGE selection of Games Workshop stuff, plus Infinity, Frostgrave, Bolt Action, Wargames Atlantic, Cyperpunk minis, etc. They also have a lot of limited edition GW minis, books, but most importantly: used mini bins. If you want to buy some minis secondhand or sell some of your stuff, you can absolutely do so here. Gaming space: this is the main reason to come to Sword and Board: their gaming space is HUGE, with two separate basement rooms and a massive collection of (well designed) terrain, as well as board games on hand for people to play. There is space enough for several games or RPG sessions to happen at once. This sheer amount of space and terrain is what makes S&B probably my favorite gaming space in the city. Show less

Had the displeasure of being in this store again recently, and thought I would write a full review with constructive criticisms. However upon reading the reviews here I can see that for at least a decade they have been receiving the same review I was preparing to write, every 6 months like clockwork. It's evident they don't care to change. So in place of a constructive review, a scathing warning to potential customers. This store and its staff embody all the negative stereotypes of TTRPG players, board gamers, and wargamers. Stereotypes most try to prove wrong. If rude, unhelpful, staff wont keep you away, absurd prices will. They'll tell you that they're too small to have good prices like the big guys. But those of us who frequent the small LGS's know that small doesn't usually mean ripping off customers at every turn, in-fact it's often the opposite. If I never went back it would be too soon. Then when I went to pickup they didn’t even give me the same pieces that I brought in. I don’t know much about this game and I came across these miniatures in a storage locker I bought. My guess is they took some of the better pieces and replaced them with others. Anyway, Sold the miniatures for $2 a piece on marketplace. And the 3 other board games for $20 each. Total - $180 Probably best not to buy here either as you’re probably paying much more than other places Show less

This place is a gem. It’s packed to the rafters with an excellent selection of hard-to-find books for all sorts of TTRPGs, a selection of prepainted minis that will fill basically any need you have for your game and a wide variety of paints and supplies. When I come into Toronto I make a point of visiting Sword and Board because every time I’ve gone I’ve been so impressed with the helpful staff. The first time I spent the better part of an hour going through minis to find minis for my players - all with the help of one of the staff. My second trip was quick - I knew what minis I needed and they came through for me. Today I went in to peruse new books and I left with more than I was expecting simply because the service was so good. You can tell that this store is a labour of love. Every time I’ve been in they’ve had a tonne of stuff going on - from inventory to ordering to setting up the games space - but every time they’ve made time to help me out. They’ll always be my go-to store! Show less

Today I went in to peruse new books and I left with more than I was expecting simply because the service was so good. You can tell that this store is a labour of love. Every time I’ve been in they’ve had a tonne of stuff going on - from inventory to ordering to setting up the games space - but every time they’ve made time to help me out. Had a lovely experience today whilst making my first ever purchase here. I was looking for a wedding gift for a friend and don't really know much about RPG games or Warhammer. I ended up having a really lovely chat with the guy working today who was so sweet and showed me tons of gift options and was patient with me while I asked a lot of questions. Only thing I would have really loved was knowing before I made the purchase that they don't do refunds just in case I didn't get the right gift BUT I really appreciated his help and patience with me. There was another employee there who was also very friendly and chatty so it was a nice first visit! Show less

Had a lovely experience today whilst making my first ever purchase here. I was looking for a wedding gift for a friend and don't really know much about RPG games or Warhammer. I ended up having a really lovely chat with the guy working today who was so sweet and showed me tons of gift options and was patient with me while I asked a lot of questions. Hahah lol. These guys claim to buy used boardgames collections. They should call the service: let me tell you a joke. Or: why not come to the store to we can kick you in the face lol. I dealt with Bjarne. I am absolutely shocked that they would even make me an offer as low as they did for the ga... Read more

Hahah lol. These guys claim to buy used boardgames collections. They should call the service: let me tell you a joke. Or: why not come to the store to we can kick you in the face lol. I dealt with Bjarne. I am absolutely shocked that they would even make me an offer as low as they did for the games in the pictures. I was offered $325 cash. Or $650 in store credit. Like wow. I would avoid this place like the plague. Edit after owner Comment. LOL "taking the games off their hands for a modest price" there were over 160 titles in my collection, you offered roughly $2 a game regardless if it was sealed or not? How is that Modest. I am sorry my collection was worth more than your entire inventory. best of luck, not sure how people even go to your store with all the horrible reviews. Show less
