This is absolutely one of my favorite spots to hang out in Austin. I've been to a few board games restaurants and cafes, including out of state, and this one is unmatched. The ambience is amazing. There are games for everyone, and they even have a small console set up at the bar. There's also two secret rooms behind the bookshelves that you can rent out for a private event! The food is amazing, fairly priced and very vegan/vegetarian friendly. Highly recommend. Show less

Vigilante used to be an amazing place to hang out with friends, have good food and drinks, and play board games. I even once reserved one of the private rooms for a significant life event. Unfortunately, I can no longer recommend it for any of those activities. Last time I was at Vigilante, I had made a reservation for 3 hours for a table. Upon arrival 5 minutes early, I was told that the table wasn't ready as the last group hadn't left. After waiting 10 minutes, I inquired with the front desk again and was told the same thing. They continued to delay us over and over until we were finally seated 30 minutes after our reservation start time. Once I sat down, I realized that the pricing had significantly increased per menu item and they no longer offered the combo deal. Unfortunate, but not a deal breaker. My group decided to play a new game and asked the waitress to send the "game explainer" to us when possible. They never came, and additional polite requests for them were also similarly ignored. The quality of the food and drinks is alright. It's a shame that they've so severely paired down their menu. A lot of my and my friends favorite items have slowly disappeared over the years, and what's left is nothing to really write home about. It is serviceable though. The final straw was when our waitress gave us our bills 15 minutes before the end of our reservation time and said that we needed to leave asap. So, in total, they made us wait 30 minutes and decided to cut our time short an additional 15. If you decide to come here, add an additional hour into your reservation as a buffer for the 45 minutes they will penalize you for showing up. Overall, Vigilante has shifted focus away from giving customers an amazing, fun atmosphere in lieu of churning people through as quickly as possible and charging them a premium price for that subpar experience. There are now several game bars in Austin alone that provide better food and customer service for similar pricing, so Vigilante doesn't really have any positives bringing me back. Sorry Vigilante, I'll remember all the fun game nights I had at you, but I'm never coming back. Show less

They have multiple local beers and ciders, as well as many unique and fun cocktails, each one given a perfectly nerdy name. The food is some of the best comfort around, with the best house made burgers, fries, and milkshakes you can imagine as well as more exotic offerings like gyoza and samosas and 10 different possible dipping sauces. But what makes it really special is the atmosphere. If you like games, these are your people. Each table has a call button that lights up a signal to call the waiter over so you never have to yell. My group needed help learning the rules of a new board game, and one of the staff members did an amazing job explaining the rules quickly and clearly.
